Bhai Dooj (Yama Dwitiya)
The tilak-day prayer for a brother's long life.
Two days after Diwali, sisters mark their brothers with tilak and pray for their long life: Yama Dwitiya, the day even the lord of death honored a sister's blessing. When the miles make the tilak impossible, the prayer can still arrive with his name in it.

The prayer at its heart
Word for word, the way it has always been said. Their name goes at its head, and your words travel with it. The Sanskrit never arrives alone: a transliteration, so anyone can say it aloud, and its meaning in plain English.
Mahāmṛtyuñjaya: A Sister's Prayer for Her Brother
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् । उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ॥
oṁ tryambakaṁ yajāmahe sugandhiṁ puṣṭi-vardhanam | urvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya māmṛtāt ||
We revere the three-eyed one, fragrant, who nourishes all beings: as the ripe cucumber slips free of the vine, so may my brother be freed from harm and held fast to long life. The longevity prayer a sister carries to the tilak.
Some prayers are carried in tradition, or their exact place in the texts is debated. We name the source as it is.
