Exam & New Beginnings

Saraswati's blessing before the big day.

Before results, before rankings, there is the older wish: that study itself be luminous. This blessing asks, in the words teacher and student have shared for millennia, that their effort be protected and bright.

The prayer at its heart

Word for word, the way it has always been said. Their name goes at its head, and your words travel with it. The Sanskrit never arrives alone: a transliteration, so anyone can say it aloud, and its meaning in plain English.

Sarasvatī Vandanā: Yā Kundendu

yā kundendu-tuṣāra-hāra-dhavalā yā śubhra-vastrāvṛtā yā vīṇā-vara-daṇḍa-maṇḍita-karā yā śveta-padmāsanā | yā brahmācyuta-śaṅkara-prabhṛtibhir devaiḥ sadā vanditā sā māṁ pātu sarasvatī bhagavatī niḥśeṣa-jāḍyāpahā ||

She who is fair as the jasmine flower, the moon, and a garland of snow; who is robed in white; whose hands are graced by the vīṇā; who is seated on a white lotus; whom Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva and the gods forever honour. May that goddess Sarasvatī protect me, she who removes every dullness of the mind.
