First Haircut (Mundan)

A prayer for long life at the first haircut.

The first haircut is older than memory: the birth hair is offered, and long life is asked for the child in its place. Whether it happens at a temple, a riverbank, or a backyard in New Jersey, the prayer is the same one. This blessing sets their name inside it.

The prayer at its heart

Word for word, the way it has always been said. Their name goes at its head, and your words travel with it. The Sanskrit never arrives alone: a transliteration, so anyone can say it aloud, and its meaning in plain English.

Mahāmṛtyuñjaya: For Long Life, at the First Haircut

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् । उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ॥

oṁ tryambakaṁ yajāmahe sugandhiṁ puṣṭi-vardhanam | urvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya māmṛtāt ||

We revere the three-eyed one, fragrant, who nourishes all beings: as the ripe cucumber slips free of the vine, so may this child be freed from harm and held fast to long life. The traditional longevity prayer, recited over the child at the first haircut.
