What this day is
The festival of lights on the new moon of Kartik: Rama's return to Ayodhya, and Lakshmi Puja on the darkest night of the year. The row of lamps is the whole theology: light placed against the dark, deliberately.
How families observe it at home
Families deep-clean beforehand, draw a rangoli at the entrance, light diyas at dusk in every doorway and window, and do Lakshmi-Ganesha puja together in the evening: new clothes, and sweets shared with neighbors of every background. Keep one diya burning through the night if it is safe to do so.
