What this day is
The great night of Shiva, observed on the fourteenth night of the waning moon of Phalguna. Devotees keep a fast and a night vigil, remembering Shiva as the still point of the turning world.
How families observe it at home
At home, families keep a simple fast (fruit and milk are common), pour water or milk over a Shiva linga or image, and hold at least one quiet hour of wakeful devotion after dinner in place of the full traditional all-night vigil. Many US temples run evening abhishekam sessions worth attending as a family.
